Emms 2010 Techie Predictions

So here we are at the end of another year. 2009 has been an interesting one for gadgetry and technology as a whole. Here are my own predictions in no particular order of 2010 tech which I believe will come to the fore or at the very least become more prevalent.

1) Virtualisation -- Yes it has been around for years in one form or another. However, more and more large companies are jumping on the bandwagon. (including my own I might add). This isn't big news however, the area of Virtualisation which will really take off is Virtualisation on the Desktop. Windows 7 for example ( Business and Ultimate ONLY) includes a virtualised hyper visor for running XP specific programs, thus ensuring that compatibility will be a thing of the past. M$ isn't the only company doing this. Be prepared for some big announcements from some of the major players in 2010.

2)Google's Android/Chrome offering -- Not just the phones you see. Whilst they might not have the sway to topple the mighty IPhone, their clever OS is wheeling its way into more and more devices. So not only will we see an increase in Android based Phones, but Netbooks, Tablet Devices and Desktop PC's will start to become bundled with their lightweight operating system.

3) Ebook Readers -- Again not necessarily new to the technology game, they are slowly but surely seeing more widespread use and whilst we currently have Kindle, Sony and Nook to thank for their contributions. It will be only a matter of time before major players such as Creative Labs throw their lot in. Bearing in mind, these guys have some sway with the education establishments, it may not be long before we start to see these devices creep into our schools.

4) Alternative Power Sources/Energy/Transport -- Yes we have solar panels, yes we have wind turbines etc.. but its only in the last few years that we have seen this form of energy provision come along in terms of its viability. I would also like to think that electric/hybrid vehicles will become much more useful in 2010. Battery technology has improved to no end, so longer distances and better performance are no longer a dream.

5) 3D - You are sighing at this point now I know, but bear with me here. We are not talking Jaws 3D etc. Whilst it fundamentally incorporates the stereoscopic principle that emerged almost 100 years ago, there have been huge advances in how this is now presented to the audience. Encompassing all forms of digital entertainment from movies, games, even your usual television shows ( although I cant imagine Countryfile 3D being that much more exciting than normally ), its fair to say that it is undergoing a revolution. 3D LCD TVs, 3d Cameras, Peripherals for your Computers/Consoles and hopefully less headaches mean that its coming to a living room near you soon !!

6)Sharks with "Frigging" Laser beams - Who would have thought that Dr Evils once crazy idea is finally becoming a reality. 2010 will see an increased amount of Shark Patrols in our oceans. The laser will give them more flexibility when dealing with unwanted invaders and combining that with their deadly bite, will make them an unstoppable force.

Thanks for reading our odds and sods over the past half of 2009. I wish you and yours a gadget filled 2010 and hopefully my little slice of t'internet will grow in articles and information for your reading pleasure :)
